Student Writing Project on the Theme of Diversity in Schools

The International Literacy Association (ILA) and the American Educational Research Association (AERA) are collaborating to amplify student voices in critical conversations promoting and uplifting diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in schools and communities. The writing project, which is open to students in kindergarten though grade 12, is related to the theme Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities.

AERA has developed writing prompts appropriate for young students, which are organized around the themes of Fairness, Safety, Belonging, Representation, and Familiarity. Prompts are also available for older students. Complete submission instructions are included with each set of prompts. Submitted pieces will be considered for inclusion at an official event during AERA’s annual conference from April 11 to 14, 2024.

Deadlines: Submissions are due by February 16, 2024. Educators will be notified by March 6, 2024, if a student’s response has been selected.
