Real-World Experiences from the Front Lines of Journalism

Budding journalists are encouraged to think beyond the classroom and follow their curiosity in a city brimming with stories. The New York Times Summer Academy offers two-week courses where students learn core journalism skills. Whether they’re drawn to media, culture, sports, fashion, business, or law, they’ll investigate the forces shaping these fields with the guidance of seasoned journalists, editors, and media professionals.

Summer Academy is open to rising high school students (grades 10–12) and graduating seniors based on the grade the student is entering in the fall 2026 school year. The 2026 program has four terms: June 7–19, June 21–July 3, July 5–17, July 19–31. Students must be 15 to 18 years old by the first day of the program.

The courses are taught by Times reporters, editors, and media professionals, who bring real-world insights into the classroom and help students explore a career in journalism and develop media literacy. The curriculum includes visits to journalistic, academic, and cultural institutions, allowing students to explore New York City’s vibrant culture. The full Course Catalog is available for students to explore online.

The Summer Academy 2026 application portal is open. Each application is reviewed holistically, and qualified students who have demonstrated a genuine interest in Summer Academy will be considered for admission to the program. Limited needs-based scholarships are available. The goal is to accept as many qualified students as possible. Interested students are invited to register for the free Virtual Info Session on February 24, 2026, to meet the team and find out more about the program.
