Math Skills and Social–Emotional Learning Through the Game of Basketball

NBA Math Hoops leverages the game of basketball to build fundamental math skills through a physical and digital basketball-themed board game, a curriculum, and a community program. Designed for students in grades 4–8, this free program develops students’ algebra readiness prior to entering high school, while strengthening important skills such as self-regulation and executive function.

The NBA Math Hoops program is implemented in in-school, out-of-school, and home learning environments. Students compete in pairs, drafting a team of NBA and WNBA players and solving math problems using real-life player statistics to score points. Gameplay builds fluency with fundamental math skills as students share responsibilities and practice good sports conduct in a timed basketball-game format. A curriculum accompanies the game, exploring key math concepts across 10 lessons.

The nonprofit Learn Fresh, in partnership with NBA Cares, offers two free mobile apps both of which are available on iOS and Android devices. The NBA Math Hoops app provides a virtual version of the in-person board game. The Skills + Drills app simulates the NBA All-Star experience with extra practice in math operations.

Each NBA Math Hoops season tips off with Educator Training led by Learn Fresh staff. Trainings are offered both virtually and in person in select locations throughout the year. The schedule for 2026 is posted online. During the season, Learn Fresh also offers regional events across the US and beyond. Students enrolled in the NBA Math Hoops program are eligible to compete in the NBA Math Hoops Global Championship hosted in New York City.
