Written Out Loud is a writing and storytelling program pioneered at Yale University and developed in Hollywood. The organization’s team works with schools and students outside of school to teach writing and empathy skills through collaborative storytelling practices. Founded by a filmmaker and screenwriter, the Written Out Loud program is dedicated to teaching writing and storytelling in a collaborative manner that avoids the traditional solitude of writing and builds on ancient storytelling traditions and the modern practices in Hollywood writing rooms.
The program’s 16-hour core curriculum immerses children in storytelling conventions such as the hero’s journey. The 16 hours can be broken up in a variety of ways and can be delivered by a Written Out Loud instructor in-person or via videoconference.
