Founded by a former math teacher and school leader, Black Girls Love Math (BGLM) uses a research-based approach to create an engaging, encouraging, and culturally conscious space for Black girls to explore and discover math. The space created by BGLM pushes girls to “nerd-out” about mathematical concepts and participate in cooperative competitions, career mentoring, and deep mathematical inquiry. The girls use their new math superpowers as tools for community engagement and social justice.
Black Girls Love Math aims to increase the number of Black girls enrolled in Advanced Placement math classes, increase college enrollment in math majors, and increase the presence of Black women in math-focused careers. The organization provides afterschool enrichment by partnering with schools and community organizations to provide one- to two-hour sessions that focus on grade-level content in a challenging yet supportive environment.
