SMASH is a nonprofit organization that works to build a strong, diverse, and socially conscious tech workforce by leveling the playing field through academic learning and experiential engagement for high school and college students.
SMASH Academy, the organization’s flagship program, is a free three-year, intensive STEM-focused college prep program that empowers students in grades 9–12 to deepen their talents and pursue STEM careers. Each summer, scholars are immersed in tuition-free studies in partnership with leading universities throughout the country. During the academic year, scholars participate in monthly programming.
In the academy, scholars build relationships with facilitators and STEM professionals that reflect their same demographics. They gain access to computer science, STEM, college success, and electives courses and workshops, as well as networking events with STEM professionals. Post-academy, they receive work-readiness training and paid internships. They also become part of a robust community of peers with support that will last a lifetime.
Current SMASH academic partners include University of California, Berkeley; Stanford University; University of California, Davis; Morehouse College; Wayne State University; Illinois Institute of Technology; Northeastern University; and Spelman College.
SMASH Academy is now accepting applications from current ninth graders. The academy will take place from July 9 to 29, 2022. Visit the website to learn more about the new hybrid model that uses in-person and virtual learning.
