The third annual O’Connor Civics Challenge, an online civics competition sponsored by the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute for American Democracy, has expanded for 2022. The challenge is for middle school students to express their knowledge of civics by creating an exciting, informative art piece on a selected civics topic.
Current sixth, seventh, and eighth graders can choose from one of the following topics: Legislative Branch, Executive Branch, Judicial Branch, Citizenship Rights & Responsibilities, Checks & Balances, and Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. After they have selected a topic, students choose an art form to best express their knowledge of civics. Submission categories include Video, Original Song (written lyrics or audio/video), Storytelling (via audio or video), Poetry (written or via audio or video), Written Essay (up to 1,000 words), or Mixed Media Artwork (poster, painting, or sculpture).
Finalists in each grade will be awarded Apple products, including a MacBook Pro for first-place winners in each grade. In addition to student prizes, the institute will award up to $10,000 in $100 gift cards to teachers of participating students. Teachers whose students earn one of the nine prizes will also each receive an additional $250 gift card.
Deadline: Registration is open; entries may be submitted through March 26, 2022.
