Poptential from Certell is a family of free social studies courses that infuse lessons with pop culture–rich media to engage learners and teach them how to think critically. Developed by social studies teachers, the standards-based courses include history, civics, economics, and personal finance. Well-known movies, sitcoms, and other popular shows are used to increase student engagement and comprehension. Examples include The Patriot, Hamilton, 12 Years a Slave, The Lone Ranger, Seabiscuit, The Great Gatsby, I Love Lucy, Argo, Family Guy, Parks and Recreation, and Seinfeld. The curriculum is divided into volumes, modules, and lessons to aid in comprehension and create natural breaks for check-ins. Amplifying the curriculum are “Bell Ringers”—tidbits of information and intriguing questions that make for a spike in curiosity and engagement. Bell Ringers are placed throughout the curriculum to create dynamic learning.
