Virtual Summer Camps to Keep Children’s Minds Active

June 1, 2020

Parents and children will find a wide variety of engaging camp activities to take part in when they dive into Camp Wonderopolis. Some of the activities revolve around STEM-field careers, others are designed to boost literacy and comprehension, and still others to help foster and improve critical thinking and creativity in young minds. After downloading the free Camp Kits, campers and their families can go at their own pace and take full advantage of all that this free digital summer camp has to offer.

Google’s free four-week interactive summer camp, #SummerWithGoogle, engages children in learning activities that explore topics such as the ocean, space, nature, and music. Prior to the camp’s official start date (July 13), children can watch videos of last year’s educational activities.

From June through August, Varsity Tutors‘ free weeklong interactive summer camps for children aged 5–18 expand learning through new experiences, such as coding, creative writing, painting, and even video-game design. The more they participate, the more they will get to work and learn with peers from every corner of the world. New camps are added every day.

Make: magazine’s free Family Maker Camp encourages making and hands-on learning at home. The project-based activities integrate science and technology, as well as arts and crafts, bringing multiple disciplines together. Children receive daily activities ranging from creating slime to building unique art portraits. Family Maker Camp also connects children and their families with a community of makers of all ages who have a broad range of interests and skills. They will be introduced to makers online who will talk about their projects and their process.

Candlewick Press has launched a free program for children and young adults wondering what to do with their long summer days. Camp Candlewick is a free 12-week online education program for youth in grades 1–12. Campers will be divided into virtual cabins by age group and participate in workshops, read-alouds, and other activities. They will be joined by authors and illustrators, including Megan McDonald, Meg Medina, G. Neri, and Cynthia Leitich Smith. Camp Candlewick’s home will be on the publisher’s Stay Home site and will run from June 11 to August 27, 2020.
