Fueling STEM’s Future: Initiative Amplifying Minority Students’ Academic, Technical & Leadership Skills

Imagine a world where engineering is a household conversation in every community and where minority students can see themselves thriving as engineers.

The National Association of Black Engineers (NSBE) is committed to equipping all students with the technical expertise, leadership skills, and industry connections needed to drive economic and technological progress. Through its Pre-College Initiative (PCI), NSBE aims to ignite a passion for STEM in students of color by offering immersive experiences in technical competitions, academic growth, and leadership development.

Among NSBE’s precollege offerings are a summer engineering program, a hands-on science challenge, and a math tutoring program for minority youth.

  • Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) is a cost-free, three-week summer program that provides an engaging educational experience for minority children in grades 3–5.
  • The hands-on KidWind challenge invites students in grades 4–12 around the country to explore the power of wind by building and testing wind turbines and then competing in a supportive environment.
  • And the yearlong Try-Math-A-Lon (TMAL) program helps minority students in grades 9–12 prepare for standardized tests such as the ACT and SAT through tutoring competitions and strong STEM-focused habits. Students compete year-round and advance to a culminating event at the national competition held at NSBE’s Annual Convention. Students with the top scores win prizes.

With unique, year-round technology, science, and leadership development opportunities, NSBE helps prepare youth of color for their tomorrow driven by STEM.
