Female STEM Innovators Serving As Relatable Role Models for Middle School Girls

Increasing gender representation in STEM fields starts with shifting students’ perceptions. The IF/THEN Collection is the largest free resource of its kind dedicated to increasing access to authentic and relatable images of real women in STEM.

Comprised of thousands of photos, videos, posters, and profiles that authentically represent women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the content features a variety of careers to illuminate the relevance of STEM everywhere. The female STEM innovators selected by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Lyda Hill Philanthropies AAAS If/THEN Ambassadors all serve as high-profile role models for middle school girls.

The IF/THEN Collection’s Educator Hub includes resources such as Scientist-of-the-Month toolkits, a collection of educational tools designed to challenge public misconceptions and inspire the next generation of STEM leaders. Educators will also find interviews with STEM professionals such as Allie Miller, the US head of AI Growth for Startups and Venture Capital Growth at Amazon, influencing the greatest AI companies in the world; and Afua Bruce, who has made it a career of using engineering to protect, serve, and improve the world around her, merging her passion for technology with her social conscience to tackle issues of equity around the world.

Plus: Sports and STEM have been two key drivers of cultural disruption, offering moments where human performance has advanced and progressed beyond anyone’s imagination. Today the intersection of science, technology, engineering, and math will give opportunity for the forward progression of both amateur and professional sports. Leading the charge are women who have and will continue to be at the forefront of STEM achievements, impacting how today’s young women will continue to achieve their personal best despite challenges.

STEM in the Stadium is an initiative of SheIS in partnership with IF/THEN that introduces students, through text and video, to women athletes in tennis, soccer, hockey, golf, softball, gymnastics, track, and wrestling. Following the introduction of each sport, students are invited to test their knowledge.
