As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes society and our classrooms, preparing students to use it ethically and responsibly has never been more urgent. Data Science 4 Everyone and the National Council for the Social Studies are partnering to host the AI Ethics & Tech Summit, a national planning event to incorporate emerging technology skills, habits, and dispositions into K–12 social studies curriculum and instruction.
Discussion at the event will focus on why the essential skills of data literacy, media literacy, news literacy, and AI literacy are foundational for students to use technology and AI in an ethical and responsible manner. Participants will also have the chance to break into smaller groups to identify further work needed for digital democracy skills in the social studies education context. From those discussions, participants will move into a workshop where they will draw on the K–12 Data Literacy & Data Science Learning Progressions and AI4K12 AI Literacy Frameworks to create subject-specific guidance for social studies teaching strategies and curriculum, and to incorporate new ideas that are authentic to the discipline.
The summit is intended for K–12 social studies educators, curriculum specialists, education leaders, and tech-integrated teaching advocates committed to preparing students for a digital future.
The event will take place on August 1 and 2, 2025, in Oak Brook, Illinois. The registration fee is $349 for NCSS members, $449 for nonmembers, and $1,575 for groups of 5. The nonmember fee includes a complimentary one-year comprehensive NCSS membership. Limited travel support is available from Data Science 4 Everyone; applications for travel support are due by June 16, 2025.
