Doorway to a Universe of STEAM Learning

The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio, is a nationally esteemed science center that inspires interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) topics and delivers engaging hands-on learning through onsite, offsite, and online experiences such as COSI Connects, students’ doorway to a universe of experiential and transformative STEAM learning.

For example, can students give an ROV a set of instructions to get it through an obstacle course? They may want to try the ROV Races activity (for grades 3–8). The activity page includes an explanatory video, a materials list, instructions, discussion questions, an added challenge, and an extension. In addition, students can access a “teachback guide” so they can tell their teacher what they learned.

Do students know what colors are hidden in markers? In the Marker Chromatograph Flowers activity (for K–6), learners use chromatography to discover the different pigments hidden in markers. Then they use that chromatography to create beautiful flowers out of coffee filters. The activity encourages children to talk about how the beauty they find in the environment inspires them to make art. As an extension, students may want to view COSI’s Science Now video “How Ocean Depths Transform Our Vision of Colors.”

The Connects page is organized by Themes (Space, Environment, Dinosaur); Experiences (Activity, Video, Places to Visit); Age Groups (Early Childhood, Elementary School, Middle School, High School, Adult, Family); and Map (places to tour, virtually or in person). The Connects activities can be printed or downloaded at no charge.
