Award for Literary Magazines Exhibiting High-Quality Student Writing and Design

The Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) Award is designed to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines that exemplify and celebrate the art and craft of writing.

This student literary magazine program is open to all middle and secondary schools throughout the United States, US territories, Canada, and American schools abroad. The schools should be US accredited to enter. The magazines submitted need to have been published between September of the previous year and June of the entry year. Digital versions are accepted and welcomed. Elementary magazines are accepted but will be judged by the middle school rubric.

National judges complete the first round of judging based on a point system. The Evaluation guides that will be used for judging the Middle School and High School submissions are available to download from the REALM website. The REALM Advisory Committee determines if a magazine merits the honor of REALM First Class. The REALM Committee Chair has recorded a rubric walkthrough that judges will receive starting in 2024. The recording is also beneficial for submitting magazines.

An online interactive map tracks all the REALM First Class winners from 2008 to present. Some advisors have added their contact information for anyone who wishes to reach out with questions about running a literary magazine.

The award is sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE); however, NCTE membership is not required to apply. Entries will be accepted until July 31, 2024, and the results will be announced in January 2025 and posted on the NCTE website. Schools will receive a certificate denoting their award, and the names of the student editors, literary advisor, and school will appear on the NCTE website.
