The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) is the national advocate for Purple Star Schools, a program that supports military-connected children as they relocate to new schools due to a parent’s change in duty station. As of June 5, 2024, 40 states have received Purple Star School designation, and six states have proposed/pending legislation.

Cybersecurity Assessments, Training, and Best Practices for School Districts

The US Department of Education has launched a council to help K–12 schools strengthen their cybersecurity practices. The “government coordinating council,” which includes representatives from federal agencies, state education departments, education technology leaders, superintendents, and principals, will host cybersecurity-training activities, recommend policies, and communicate best practices to help schools respond to and recover from cybersecurity threats and attacks.

Eyes on the Total Solar Eclipse

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.
