The headlines are seemingly the same each day: student mental health is at a crisis point.

Equally alarming is that schools and educators feel woefully unprepared to meet, much less conquer, the challenges that students struggle with. Post-pandemic concerns, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and depression are just a sampling of the pressures students are facing. According to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 37 percent of high school students reported they experienced poor mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, and 44 percent reported they persistently felt sad or hopeless during the past year.

Blog about discipline in schools

While my title, “Dean of Discipline,” may sound a bit strict and traditional, our school has recently implemented a strategy that is proving to be transformational for teachers and students. Like other high schools around the country, as we have emerged from the pandemic, we have experienced a spike in behavior issues ranging from fighting and insubordination to classroom disruptions and tardiness.

With millions of dollars of ESSER funding (as well as other federal, state, and local grants) still available, the smartest edtech investments are the ones that meet the following criteria:

1. Are research-backed and deliver evidence-based solutions.

2. Provide flexible, ongoing professional development.

3. Offer hours of curriculum to support any subject.

Let’s dive deeper into each of these points to prove the case for bringing coding and robotics into young learners’ hands to support development of computational thinking and invaluable science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) skills.
